i asked if i could go with him. & the obvious answer was a good laugh.
instead, i'm there with him in his journal. i wrote him a list of ideas that popped into my head - some that i've heard before, some that i made up, and i'm sure all things that have been done before thousands of times.
Just a few ideas.
· Get lost.· Simplify.
· Plant something.
· Buy ice cream for a kid.
· Take a new route home.
· Be silent for an entire day.
· Bring back less than you took.
· Trade something with someone.
· Follow a strange bug back to its home.
· Give away your most prized possession.
· Do one thing each day that exhilarates you.
· Take a train ride to an unknown destination.
· Look at something very tiny for a very long time.
· Explore the physical landscape for an entire day.
· Explore your internal landscape for an entire day.
· Compare & contrast the two through drawing only.
· Talk to someone you would never think to approach.
· Be generous with something you don’t have much of.
· Pay attention to your feet. What are they experiencing?
· Write a love poem in Spanish and leave it on a park bench.
· Pause in the middle of a busy bustling area and take a deep breath.
· Only carry $1 worth of pesos for the entire day and see what you can do with it.
· Barter with a local vendor and offer more than s/he asked for. And do it with a BIG smile.
· Pack only 20 things you absolutely must have for your trip. Everything else, leave it behind.
· Get into a conversation with a stranger and make up an elaborate story about yourself, including a new name.
Ummm...that's quite an exceptional list. I hope I can make my own up and do a multi-country excursion around latin america in my future.
ReplyDeleteI particularly love this:
Explore your internal landscape for an entire day.
